If you’re still revved up from the excitement of the British Open Championship last weekend, you’re not alone. The PGA Tour season is in full swing, and that means that daily fantasy golf is also in high gear. If you’re thinking of putting together a fantasy roster, be sure to check out our analysis. As the PGA Tour stops in for the RBC Canadian Open, you will want to be sure to draft the most competitive fantasy team possible, giving yourself the best chance of winning your league that you can. Check out our fantasy analysis below for ideas on how to put together a strong roster.
Dustin Johnson: Johnson is the top ranked golfer in the field, according to DraftKings. His salary of $12,200 is very high, even considering the quality of the rest of the field. He has made 10 of 13 cuts this season, and has 7 top ten finishes. His average stroke count per round is the lowest in the field at 69.6. He’s even won two tournaments this year. Just remember that a high salary is only worth paying when the golfer is going to be highly effective, but even in this field, Johnson is a question mark right now. He finished T54 at the Open Championship, and he had been cut from the last two tournaments before that. Even though Johnson is a strong golfer, it’s hard to justify spending this much on him in this situation.
Matt Kuchar: Kuchar is a far stronger pick than Johnson for this tournament. Not only is he considerably cheaper at $11,400, he’s also extremely comparable in every respect. He’s averaging 69.9 strokes per round and has made 15 of 17 cuts this season, with the same 7 top ten appearances that Johnson has seen. Not only that, but he is peaking right now. He finished 2nd at the Open Championship, T4 at the tourney before, and T16 at the U.S. Open. He’s playing strong golf against the best golfers in the world, and that bodes well for this weekend.
Tony Finau: Finau is not typically a Tier 1 golfer, but he is in this field. He’s made 15 of 18 cuts and has 5 top ten finishes. His stroke count is competitive in this field at 70.3 per round, and he’s averaging 71.4 fantasy points per tournament, which places him near the top of the list. He finished T27 at the Open Championship, and although this isn’t hugely spectacular, it is very strong in this field. He is a legitimate contender for a top ten finish here. If you can afford his salary of $9,500, he will make a good addition to your roster.
Ian Poulter: A mid-tier golfer, Poulter is actually a great value pick this week. His price tag stands at $8,700, but his stats show that he’s far better than this indicates. He has made 16 of 18 cuts this season, and has placed in the top ten on 2 occasions. His stroke count per round is a little high at 71.1, but a showing strong enough to justify the low price is more than likely to occur. When you take into account his T14 at the Open Championship this past weekend, he is an even stronger choice.
Patrick Cantlay: Cantlay might be a big surprise to include here, but he is perhaps the biggest value play of the week. His salary of $8,100 makes him nondescript, but that doesn’t mean that he’s not a strong pick. That’s a low enough salary that he’s well under the average cost per golfer, which gives you plenty of wiggle room for selecting stronger golfers elsewhere. But with 6 of 6 cuts made, an average stroke count of 70.5 per round, and 2 top ten finishes this season, Cantlay has a lot of potential in this field. He might be the play that places your fantasy team near the top of the league.
